Virginia Tech to upgrade supercomputer to Xserve | |

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University will upgrade its supercomputer that uses Apple Computer Inc's PowerMac G5 computers with Apple's recently introduced Xserve G5 servers that have two chips in each box, the university said on Tuesday. The new system, which went online toward the end of last year and which Virginia Tech said was the most powerful supercomputer at any university in the world at the time, will be completed by May. | ||

No they aren't, dumb@ss; they are 970 FXs at 90 nm, with other improvements as well -- theses processors are faster even at the same clock speed. However, the word is: the migration is set for late spring because they will be using faster processors (anywhere from 2.0, 2.2., 2.4, 2.6, or 2.8 -- again, all of these clockspeeds are for the FASTER 970FX.) "It cuts the system's size down by a factor of three," Varadarajan said. "The new system will take much less power and generate less heat and free up space." Saving huge amounts of space and cooling costs is a HUGE benefit. This is the major source of costs involved... eliminating 67% of those costs sounds like a very good idea to me. "But why not build a 2nd one if the first one actually worked?" Why build a second one, dumb@ss? That's a more logical question. Particularly since the first iteration fully occupies their facility. Or rather, what is so illogical about reducing the size and power consumption of your supercomputer by 67% while increasing its performance? Or further, isn't it logical that to build a "second one" or to expand the cluster, you have to make room first? Also... the word is: that with the space savings, they are going to grow the cluster. "Of course VT claimed the reasons were not about speed." And of course, you knows VT's reasons better than VT, don't you, moron? "And the answer is: the first one was a sham without ECC." The fact is: the first one did exactly what VT wanted it to do. It got in the top 5 (right on up to number 3) before next year when there are going to be many more supercomputers, it attracted funding, enrollment, grants, interest in their software (numerous federal agencies want to license their code), and put them on the map; the fact is VT and Apple had a plan which allowed for the first build and the migration from the very beginning; the fact is VT is perfectly satisfied and has never expressed any of the opinions or views you have. And you can't get over the fact that its Apple gear... despite being completely misinformed and deluded, you can't keep away from talking about your favorite company Apple. If you have a full facility, how do you build a second computer? Build a second building? Or reduce the size of the computer? The computer is not being "disassembled". Nodes are being replaced over time. There are no shams involved in this but your posts. |

Before anyone realizes it? They aren't beginning until March or April, dumb@ss, to REPLACE nodes (in other words, it will have existed for nearly a complete school year). And, moron? What is your point?
Is it #3? Is it the cheapest supercomputer per gigaflop? Is it getting even faster and better? Smaller, less power hungry? So what's your point? Is it that you are jealous that no one else has come close since ... probably won't even in the time it takes them to build it twice? Yes, that is a good point; it is extremely pathetic. From your own link: “People will look at (Virginia Tech) and say … not only did they build one machine incredibly fast, but they built two world-class machines in less than a year,” Ribbens said." Yes, he sounds dissatisfied. Parker, can't you at least go out and find some story where people (other than you) are actually complaining? Everyone at VT is very, very happy. |
