Thanks Chris. "Steve Ballmer, chief executive of Microsoft, has an idea on how to stop the US from losing computer software jobs to India: produce more engineers. "People focus often times on the labour rate differential. But the thing that's most troubling is the graduation rate of technical graduates," Ballmer lamented at a conference in NewYork last month. "In the US, we have fewer computer science graduates today than we did five years ago." | ||

This is so stoopid.
Who in their right mind, just now entering College, would go into the Software Development field knowing what is going on right now? I only know of one field that has an insatiable appetite for bodies (and souls, apparantly), and that's the Legal field. TL |

#2 I'm in the DC area and 50K is about average for Admin/accounting work. IT over here makes between 70K-95K (judging on my salary and those of my friends).
Office nurses count themselves lucky if they make 50K a year, those that make 50K+ work in hospitals where you are required to work a certain number of weekends, evening, nights and holidays... The rest of the staff seems to average about 40K per year (excluding management) and the doctors still make six figures. |

I don't know. I think Ballmer is right about not enough graduates. Not sure on salaries. $50k is actually quite a nice salary, especially for entry level. Is that what we're talking about here?
It also depends on location. In Des Moines, $50k is comfortable. In Boston it is not. As far as lowering salaries goes, that is the goal of the Open Source community, in fact Richard Stallman wants to ban people from receiving more than say $30k/year for programming jobs, so they should be in favor of this new proposal. :-( |

Hey, all you programmers out there, stop bitching. You did it to your selves! lol
That is, if you are an advocate or use open source software. Remember, it was produced at no cost. (How does that saying go? - Its free as in beer! lol) That is, the programmers that wrote the code were not being paid for their time. So, why did you think that your time is of value when you are writing code at a "XYZ" corporation? If you don't think that your time has value, why should business and IT managers think that it is of value? The bottom line is that programmers' pay and benefits have stagnated the last three years and in many cases have actually headed south. Meanwhile, IT management, project managers, server and network administrators pay have stayed the same or gone up slightly. I personally have seen my pay, bonuses, options and benefits go higher every year as a network system manager. Meanwhile, we are staffing programmers on a contract basis and at rock bottom salaries. Open sore, baby. Its free as in beer - only now programmers are crying in their beer! Doh! |

Nope, it wasn't mentioned in the article, but that doesn't mean I can't highlight the Open Source attitude of: http://www.gnu.org/gnu/manifesto.html What the facts show is that people will program for reasons other than riches; but if given a chance to make a lot of money as well, they will come to expect and demand it. Low-paying organizations do poorly in competition with high-paying ones, but they do not have to do badly if the high-paying ones are banned. The stark contrast is that Ballmer was simply offering a kneejerk suggestion, where as the Open Source world is actively pursuing this goal, even going so far as to pass legislation to enforce it. http://www.redhat.com/opensourcenow/bill_opensource.html BTW... "If you know where an $75,000 entry level is, please let me know. " That's what they were paying out in Silicon Valley for entry level. Not sure what it is around Mpls these days, my guess is the $45k range. |
