Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer identified Linux and open source software as key competitive challenges to the company in a memo sent to all employees on Wednesday. "In this environment of lean [IT] budgets and concerns about Microsoft's attention to customers, non-commercial software such as Linux and OpenOffice is seen as an interesting, 'good enough' or 'free' alternative," Ballmer wrote in his annual letter to employees summarising Microsoft's market position and its goals for the coming year. | ||

| This must be all FUD! We've all heard from sodablue and co. that Linux is dead or dying and it is in no way a competitor nor a threat! |

| #2 I never said I listened to you, I've just read comments from you and the rest of the Microsoft zealots where you time and time again state that Linux is either dead or dying and it is in no way a competitor nor a threat! And no you can't use the "oh but I was just being sarcastic", or the "oh, I was just kidding... really" lines because whilst you made you fair share of sarcastic comments many of the others were definetely not said in a joking or sarcastic manner. Although I'm sure JaggedFlame will have something to say here to the effect that I cannot possibly know for sure whether you were being sarcastic - nice to all watch each others backs. |

#10 JaggedFlame, what can I say, you never fail to dissapoint =) I'm sure sode can speak for himself, you don't need to speak for him.

Right... so how long would I have to have been in here for to know that everything soda says about Linux is sarcastic? Maybe soda, many many years ago approached the subject differently, that isn't the case lately however and therefore is irrelevant. People change, people's opinions change, I'm sure soda has better things to do than to change his stance/opinions just to "battle the forces of the evil linux supporters" - maybe he doesn't! "I can grasp this from his comments. Can you not? Or maybe you choose not to?" This is simply a forum where people express ideas and opinions using words alone. Therefore you can never really say with 100% assurance how a particular comment was meant, whether it was serious, a joke, sarcasm or something entirely different. Certain comments are relatively straightforward to work out and therefore you can be at least 99% sure of the way they were meant. Knowing this and looking at soda's past comments it is quite easy to find many comments which don't have any evidence, no matter how small, that they were meant as sarcasm. As a result I don't take them as sarcasm and I would guess that you're one of those few rare people that do! Your story of how you're all not Microsoft zealots, that you're just acting out against the Linux zealots (or anyone that dares to criticise Microsoft) is very nice but I don't buy in unfortunately - it sounds more like an excuse for making whatever comments you like and then claiming they were all a joke.... or sarcastic. |
