I don't need a server. Our FreeBSD home server runs unstoppably for years, asking nothing in return. However, my curiosity about OSes drove me on ordering the free evaluation version of Windows Server 2003 Enterprise, the latest Microsoft's OS offering. Naturally, there is a lot of marketing hype surrounding the product, but this time, I am really happy to witness that most of the hype is for real.

Some of us get it in our MSDN so it is worth a try.

Does anyone know where I can get drivers for Windows 2003? Specifically I need drivers for my Creative Lab AWE64 sound card. I can't get sound from Win2k3 (help). There are no manufacturer drivers for it because it relies on plug and play.
Everything that I have read says that Microsoft will release drivers through windows update but so far I haven't seen any. I hoping that someone here has a link or something or tell me how to get UPnP working. I have plug and play service turned on but it still doesn't pick up my sound cards.

All XP drivers can be used for Win2003 server. That's how I installed SB PCI128 and ATI Radeon drivers.
#2, MSDN copies are for testing only. You can not use it in your daily work horse PC. Doing so is a violation of MSDN license.

#5, Sound is turned off by default. You have to go into services, and change it from "Disabled" to Auto.

I don't know if all drivers work, but many do. I have a Promise Fasttrak SX4000 RAID card installed on Win2k^3 with the 2k/XP drivers and it seems to work great.

MSDN can be used for testing and developing.
I will be using it for development and some testing until the next version of windows come out.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/subscriptions/prodinfo/license.asp
"MSDN Universal, MSDN Enterprise, MSDN Professional and MSDN Operating Systems are licensed for single users, and can only be used by licensed subscribers. All products that ship in MSDN Subscriptions are for development and test purposes only, and cannot be used in a live production environment."
BTW, it is not true that all XP drivers work on W2k3. Read page 2 of the article:

sodablue, that is if you have the driver disc. I was relying on plug and play to pick it up and it doesn't. Yes I have the pnp and audio services turned on,

#10,
You will find "developing" is much more narrowly defined as to what you can do. My work place has been going through a few license auditing and we all have good idea how you may use those MSDN OSes. If you have issues with any OS, you can install MSDN copy of the OS and Dev tools and debug on the machine. However, if you use the same machine as your daily development machine, check emails etc, you need purchase a valid license.
As for drivers, I should not say *all* drivers but rather most drivers. #11, Win2k3 is released as server OS, most drivers that is not commonly used on server are not packed with the OS. You have to download them separately.

The main reason for older drivers not working is simply because they have been found to be unstable on the OS. Microsoft is really cracking down on the drivers that you can use in it's server products, as drivers tend to be the main reason that the OS crashes.

I can tell you right now, you will probably have some troubles with it.
As stated in the article, many drivers simply won't install (a driver blacklist, if you will, made by MS is in the OS). Even XP drivers may cause crashes in the OS.
There are also many applications that Windows will not allow to be installed.

sph: Mostly, it's an updated kernel, it is definately more responsive (mostly due to the ripping out of support for a good deal of legacy software), it boots more quickly, it's more secure, etc...

I found this part the most remarkable:
Fastest. Modern. OS. Ever.
Now I want someone to try playing DirectX games on it. I may just investigate this for my gaming platform!

During the betas, Dx was disabled, I don't know about the final though, haven't tried running a game on my server.

Be advised that approved NIC cards for Win2K3 Server are limited.
In fact, Intel is the only one specifically listed as compatible with Windows 2003 Server.
I had to go out and purchase an Intel Pro/1000 MT to use it.
