The world of surge protection is not a new technology, but how many of us really understand how it works, and what quality is? Many people wander to their local computer store and think they're purchasing surge protectors, when in fact they're purchasing nothing more than a glorified power strip -- "pretending" to be a a surge protector. These are the normal 5-10 outlet strips for $10 you will find at your local Walmart as well sadly, and in reality, they will not protect your valued investments as well as you may think.
As such, I have always had a battery backup or surge protector on my home PC, but never really consider my other home equipment. Now I know a lot of those bargain surge protectors you may use in your home have warranties and guarantees on your equipment in case of a hit. However I recently found out that it is not very easy to claim the insurance most companies offer. The last SEGA Dreamcast I owned was an unfortunate victim of such an occurrence, and I was not a happy camper when I could not get it replaced.
