Experts warn not to apply Microsoft patch | |

Microsoft yesterday released details of yet another vulnerability in versions of Windows, but some security experts are dubious about the contents of the patch for Windows 2000. The flaw in question is in the Windows kernel and affects XP, NT and 2000. Labelled as 'important', the bug affects the way the kernel passes error messages to a debugger. | ||

| I always wait until I hear about it on slashdot before applying the patch. That's the only way to be sure this patch doesn't also take away my first born child. |

Please... has it not been discussed at length that NO OS is free from vulnerabilities? "Yet another" implies that we should expect no more bugs from any Microsoft developer, ever. I do wonder, though, if the Windows 2003 Server kernel is not a total re-write of the 2000 or XP kernels, then shouldn't at least some of the kernel vulnerabilities (and other OS vulnerabilities, for that matter) that were discovered during the code review have been applicable to the 2000/XP OSes as well? I thought we should have seen a glut of security patch releases after the code review. |

I had the exact same problem as JaggedFlame. Uninstalled the patch and it's all good.... I was convinced that it was my IDE controller...even bought a new ATA133 PCI card--it's being shipped...that was before I found Jagged's post. Crap, if I saw it sooner, I would have saved some money--oh, well. At least I'll have a new control card in case. ;)

| My computer died after I installed the patch... essentially every program running crashed, one after the other, consistently, and everything ran slowly. This was around a day after installing it, but, this has never happened to me before. Hopefully they will release an update ... if not, I'll just uninstall it. Definitely not stable. First experience for me, as all other windows updates have been extremely reliable. |

Fastest growing because RedHat will be on version 20.0 in about a week or so!
