Microsoft has confirmed reports received by The Register that Windows 2000 PCs running a specific version of Office 2000 have been hit by sudden, unexpected requests to continually register the software with Microsoft. The glitch could leave thousands of Office users unable to continue using their software. | ||

Absolutely true, saw it yesterday on a machine. I couldn't believe my eyes. This is on Off2K SP2, corp site license.

#2, you are incorrect.
Microsoft Office 2000 did not require activation or registration in the US or Canada, only in certain international areas as well as the academic version. Microsoft Office 2000 SR1 introduced product activation in the US. So #1 was correct when he said that there was no activation required, at least based on what he wrote. This supposed bug has not appeared on any of the machines that we have running this same scenario. |

That is what I said Mr. Dee! You are wrong saying I am wrong!
Here is what *I* wrote again: "Microsoft Office 2000 SR1 introduced product activation in the US. " And what you said was: "So the Service Release 1 update included with Office 2000 was actually a testing ground and a introduction to "Activation". So we agree that MS Office 2000 SR1 required activation. And here is what I said about Microsoft Office 2000 (without SR1): "Microsoft Office 2000 did not require activation or registration in the US or Canada" And here is what you said about MS Office 2000 (without SR1): "Microsoft Office 2000 Professional which I had purchased in August 99, when it was just released, after installing, it asked if you would like to register Office when you launched one of the applications, this was a optional feature, I dimissed and continued to use Office anyway without any hamper. (Registration Not Required)" And FWIW, Professional and Premium 2000 DON'T require activation, while Professional and Premium 2000 SR1 do require activation. Now this is in a retail box environment. IF you had Office 2000 (no SR1) and then ADDED (downloading or getting the free SR1 patch CD from MS), you are also not required to activate. ONLY if the Office 2000 SR1 was in the retail box. I need no proof or screenshots because I have gone through all of this on my own! |
