At the heart of your Windows NT or Windows 2000 server's file system is NTFS, short for the NT file system, the default file system for Microsoft Windows NT and 2000. NTFS controls where Windows NT/2000 locates files on the server's hard drive. It also controls security and access privileges for those files. To get the most out of your server's hard drives, you must take NTFS into consideration. I'm going to show you how to wring the last drop of performance out of NTFS. This seems to be a common misperception. Defragmenting a disk does not free up more space, it merely optimizes the arrangement of the clusters on the disk. The size of contiguous free space is greater, but the overall quantity of free space remains the same. |

baarod, I don't see how this recovers lost disk space, unless the filesystem "sees" deeper than the cluster level. Take a four-cluster file. Say that the fourth cluster has only one byte. You can put the four clusters anywhere you want on the disk. Multiply this file by 100 on the disk. If you defrag, you'll rearrange the clusters so that you have
full | full | full | one-byte | full | full | full | one-byte.... You still have the one-byte clusters--no space is recovered. Are you saying that, before defrag, a single file could end up having more than one non-full cluster? If that were the case, I can see how a defrag could free up space, although I thought that the Windows defrag utility works at the cluster level only (in which case the the clusters would be contiguous, but you'd still have multiple non-full clusters). |
