The biggest area where we need technological innovation in e-mail isn't in scalability or functionality but in spam prevention. Although Microsoft Corp.'s Exchange Server 2003 beta (see review, above) has an improved virus-scanning API, virus and spam checking is an area that Microsoft leaves to third parties. The problem is that spam isn't a peripheral issue anymore. Spam isn't just e-mail's annoying little brother, who always hangs around wanting to be part of the action; it's a substantial threat to enterprise productivity. | ||

My favorite spam tricks:
(1) using your own email address in the "From" line, (2) saying you "opted in" when you didn't, (3) using distribution lists so the true identity of the sender is unavailable, (4) using hidden URLs to their site, (5) redirection of URLs, (6) popup and javascript spam, |

(7): Spam Providing Links to Opt-Out sites (which don't work) (8): Spam Providing E-Mail Links to Opt Out (But Go to useless hotmail, yahoo, excite, addresses) (9): Chinese, etc. Spam which most of us can't even read! |

Although that would normally be a good idea, the problem with it is IP Spoofing, mass-account creation, domain forgery, etc. Next thing you know, you wouldn't get any mail from Yahoo, MSN, Hotmail, AOL...etc. Hmmm...on second thought, losing those mails might not be so bad! :) |

Kevin, when I'm at work I don't subscribe to email lists (unless it's specific to my job), naturally--that just makes sense. This morning I received a "TOTALLY UNCENSORED BUKKAKE FEST!!!" site ad (complete with pictures!)--their claim is I opted-in.
Uh, no. Sorry. No bukkake for me at work, thanks. It's annoying, potentially damaging, and sometimes illegal (got the teen-horse one yet? I did...5 times). The point being, if you post a message to a SINGLE usenet group, or even a protected group (like for Corel Paradox--hosted on Corel's own servers) you'll get swamped. Also, I think that some (no really?) mail servers out there are keeping records of emails received, and from whom, and they're selling the list. Why else would someone in my position get the stuff I get? It's weird.... |
