The basic design of laptop computers -- a screen and keyboard joined by a hinge -- has been unchanged for years. Microsoft Corp. is trying to shake all that up with its Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, an operating system for computers with touch-sensitive displays and pens that replace the mouse and, to some extent, the keyboard. | ||

| Good point. The computer industry wouldn't be what it is today without Microsoft. Standards drive industry. New innovation would never occur like it is if everyone were sticking their head only half out. Microsoft, instead, announces "we're putting $300M into this potential innovation; who's with us to help us realize this?" and all of the manufacturers flock to them with open checkbooks like visitors to the Clinton White House. Can you imagine where our industry would be today if Bill Gates had released MS-DOS as open source and there had soon been 10 different implementations by other authors, each only 90% compatible with each other... and, thus, all of our computer industry innovation originated from these kings of no original ideas? <cringe> |

Drestin definately has a point. The computer world has been moving forward much more rapidly since about 1995 than it was the 15 years prior to that. I see Microsoft largely responsible for taking this lead... I definately do not see Linux being part of that forward movement, but rather they act as an impediment to progress.
I have absolutely no desire to go back to the computing world in the 1980's... Most of the people, like bas, who want to go back to that time weren't even around in the industry to remember it. |

Are there any tv commercials for TabletPCs? I haven't seen any. Is it because they are pushing them to the corp market?
Just seems to me like a few commercials could get quite a few purchasers. |

bas - Sorry. I just found it rather funny considering what a big deal the open source community made about it being fixed in 90 minutes.
I've never been a big fan of the Pointer Sisters. |

I listen to music on my Nomad Zen 20GB mp3 player, which was $200 cheaper than your iPod, and has both Firewire AND USB. (Unlike the iPod.) It also can serve as an external hard drive, so I can take not just music anywhere, but any of my files anywhere! (Unlike the iPod.) Oh, and it supports WMA, so I can store around twice as much music in the same space with the same quality. (Inlike the iPod.) Too bad Apple overcharged you so much! (Sorry, couldn't resist.) |
