Microsoft has released a software update to correct connection problems with network gear it unveiled in mid-September. The fix could resolve problems in the company's 802.11b wireless, or Wi-Fi, and Ethernet hubs that either dropped connections with local computers or with Internet service providers. Users started reporting problems soon after the network gear appeared in stores around Oct. 1. | ||

Anyone aware of how to make Microsoft's Wired Base Station pass NetBIOS packets?
Unfortunately, opening up ports 135-139 TCP and UDP doesn't seem to make much of a difference. It'd be nice if I could access my computer by *name* from other computers not connected to the router but that does require either a DNS or WINS setup. Although if the router passes broadcast Netbios packets appropriately, I should be able to connect to the machine. Turning off the firewall, or adding the machine to the DMZ doesn't make any difference. The goal is to access a computer connected to the router by name from a computer that is somewhere else on the same WAN subnet (i.e. not connected to the router but on the same network in the same subnet). I've got my Linksys passing Netbios and it works but not with MS's. Figured I'd toss the question out here. Most routers have an option to pass type 20 packets and what not simply. Anyone know how to do this with Microsoft's router? This post was edited by aamendala on Monday, November 11, 2002 at 20:54. |
