Software giant Microsoft has tied up with the Singapore government and private firms to launch a new Web portal. The portal supports a new computer language, XML - or Extensible Markup Language. Microsoft hopes to popularise XML, touting it as a standard language for computers to speak to one another across the world, and across the Internet. Some corporations already use XML-based Web services to link disparate systems, but wide-scale consumer-oriented XML Web services have yet to catch on.
