Oracle undercuts Microsoft with Collaboration Suite | |

Oracle Corp has announced the immediate availability of its new Collaboration Suite, claiming to undercut rival Microsoft Corp by two thirds. I'm not sure, Parker; perhaps they included the software and hardware required to hook up an Exchange system to a PBX. But after looking a bit further into this, the product demos and specs are quite impressive. I'm not interested in switching right now, but if this product was around a year ago, I'd have made sure to consider it.
I haven't seen any information on what migration utilities they have, though. We moved from GroupWise 5.2 to Exchange 2000, which actually went pretty well using only the utilities included with Exchange. Oracle seems to be short on answers when it comes to that at the moment, or at least they've not made it clear from anywhere that I've been on their site. |

| bluvg, you *might* want to get a customer testimony or two on the product before you go switching such a crucial piece of technology. Price isn't exactly the most important factor with some software. |

Since AW is OK with posting this article twice, I'm OK with posting the same comment twice.
"...that it has priced the software at one third of the price of Microsoft's Outlook." "Collaboration Suite license for $60 per named user" Am I understanding that Outlook costs $180? Or is the Register just a little off on its facts. |

Obviously, mooresa56... I said "consider," not "purchase," and customer testimony is all part of that process. The product is worth evaluating, if nothing else. We're using Exchange 2000, and some of Oracle's criticisms are warranted:
http://www.oracle.com/ip/deploy/cs/email/ms_questions.html Particularly with regard to backup and restore, Exchange has some downsides. We haven't had a problem with reliability at all, although frequent patching makes it difficult to get long-term uptime numbers. All-in-all, we're happy with Exchange, but that doesn't mean I won't be keeping my eye out in case something fits our business better. |

bluvg, you seem to be disagreeing with me in tone, but not in the substance of your post.
I reiterate... PRICE isn't the most most important factor with some software. We are still using v5.5 and are happy with it. We plan to upgrade to 2K in Q2 next year. Wish us luck! |

I realize that price isn't always the most important factor. I think that goes without saying, but price is nonetheless a significant factor. That probably is the biggest thing Oracle has going for it (besides anti-MS sentiment... although there is also quite a bit of anti-Oracle sentiment out there, as well...). Once I looked a bit more at what they are offering, though, they really are trying to contribute something noteworthy to the field. The built-in unified messaging component was the biggest surprise to me. I think they are trying to offer quite a bit more than just low price--they are trying to deal with some of the shortcomings of Exchange as well as offer some useful functionality. It's worth a look and maybe a test drive, but again, this is all product demo stuff. Like you said, I'd want to know some others that have gone down this road before I'd even seriously consider it....
Best of luck on your Exchange upgrade! Are you doing a fresh install? What anti-virus package are you using/planning to use, btw? It's ironic considering all the media attention surrounding Outlook--since we upgraded to Exchange 2000/Outlook 2002 we haven't had a single virus infection, whereas GroupWise kept us pretty busy cleaning up machines. The anti-virus options for Exchange can't be beat, but even if you don't have a server-side AV product, Outlook 2002 offers quite a bit of protection. |
