When Microsoft introduced a new security initiative called Palladium in June, its intentions were met with rancor and skepticism. Part of the outcry occurred because it was Microsoft doing the proposing. Part of it also had to do with Microsoft's choice of a single news outlet — Newsweek — for the unveiling. Absent a full-fledged media briefing, the plan inevitably generated a lot of misconceptions about its intent and capabilities.
