TORONTO (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. MSFT.O Chairman Bill Gates said on Tuesday there would be little impact on technological innovation if hi-tech firms began accounting for employee stock options as an expense. But Gates, co-founder of the world's largest software maker and one of the world's richest men, reiterated Microsoft's stance that it has no plans to join the growing ranks of companies that have begun expensing options in a bid to improve investor confidence. | ||

mOOzilla - In the US get taxed on the difference between what you buy the stock for, and what you sell the stock for. Now in the US, if you buy the stock and keep it for a year, then there is less tax, but then that is a much larger risk for you.
I agree that options are less likely to incent people these days, primarily because the stock is going down rather than up. :) |

Face it, you get tripple or quadruple taxed for everything you do in America.
Make money - taxed Spend money - taxed Invest money - taxed Recoup investment - taxed (capital gains) Die - taxed Inheritors spend your money - taxed and the cycle begins again. |

daz - Gotta pay for the Iraqian war somehow.
I think I must be one of the few people in America who recognizes paying taxes is part of your patriotic duty and there is no point whining about it. One might as well whine that we are too safe, or enjoy too much freedom. FinancialWiz - Agreed. I think Microsoft's point is really just that they will do it, but only if everybody else does it too. |

I've never had stock options, so I have no opinion. However, it sounds to me that MS has thought it out, and if the time was right to change, they would.
Soda - I don't think sending troops and into Iraq to get Sadam is the answer, just like it wasn't the answer back in the gulf war. I think a poison dart shot out of a Pocket PC would be much more appropriate. ;-) I agree that it's our duty to pay taxes, but frankly our tax dollars are pissed away on so much useless bullshit, at every level of government, that you can't not be a little pissed off about it. |

IronCladLou - Hmm... Poison dart encapsulated PocketPC. Do you suppose Saddam would look a gift horse in the mouth? :)
As far as tax dollars... Honestly I blame the wastefulness on the partisanship in our govt. If you look at Europe they utilize their tax revenues far more efficiently primarily because they learn to cooperate with one another. In so doing they come out with better solutions to problems. In the US we swing wildly from one extreme to another, and the money just get's wasted. |
