Microsoft's .Net set to link to Apache | |

Microsoft on Wednesday will take a significant step toward expanding the appeal of its .Net software plan by announcing a link to Apache, one of the most important open-source software projects. The software giant plans to extend .Net to the popular Apache Web server, which could give Microsoft access to a far larger audience of software developers. Apache is used by more than half of all Internet sites, according to an ongoing survey by research firm Netcraft. Microsoft, which on Wednesday is to hold a day-long session at its Redmond, Wash., headquarters to outline its plans for .Net, is increasing its efforts to link .Net to popular, non-Microsoft software packages. | ||

I'm sure this is probably just for Apache on Windows.
Missed the discussion last night! I found some nice benchmark ideas at http://www.chasma.com/bench. So I was busy rewriting these in VBScript and C# to try ASP and ASP.NET. Kind of interesting results. I also installed PHP and ActivePerl to my webserver to compare those. Night and day... an ASP solution would give maybe 200 requests/sec, whereas both the PHP and Perlscript versions were on the order of 25 requests/sec. But that was using a PHP CGI engine, I am looking to see if there is an ISAPI engine I can use.(it wasn't in the 4.2.2 download I had apparently) Still doing more experimentation and then I'll write it up. |

I dunno ... if it's just ASP.NET and not Windows Forms or anything like that it could be Apache in general ... wouldn't be that hard to implement; who knows? I'll cross my fingers :) This post was edited by Sclomp on Wednesday, July 24, 2002 at 10:51. |

Sclomp - Well apparently Mono does have ASP.NET stuff working on Linux. But I think this is different because it's a joine Microsoft announcement. We'll see.
astorrs - Ok, must have to download the entire package, I just grabbed the Installer.exe one. bluesky - I really could care less. |

Yeah, just heard from a friend that Apache developers aren't really going to support the development of it, so maybe you're right ... can still cross my fingers :) ... at least Mono works somewhat. I need to try that out. Anyone have any luck with getting that to work? |

Sclomp - I was looking at it. I wanted to write a small app which would also work on Linux. Unfortunately mono is not presently supporting any of the Windows.Forms stuff. Although I understand it is their intention to at least build the basic windows, buttons, that sort of stuff. From their website http://www.go-mono.com/ The ASP.NET stuff has just been coming together over the past month or so. Hmm, maybe I'll benchmark that too. :) |
