Wal-Mart Sells Window-Less Computers | |

Saying it wants to offer its customers more options, Wal-Mart's online shopping site has started selling inexpensive computers without the Microsoft Windows operating system. Instead of Windows, Wal-Mart computers come loaded with LindowsOS, operating software not compatible with most popular Microsoft programs. LindowsOS is based on the open-source Linux operating system and made by San Diego-based Lindows.com. Wal-Mart says on the Web site that LindowsOS "delivers the stability of Linux with the ease of Windows. These computer systems are a perfect low-cost alternative to computers preloaded with Microsoft Windows" The Wal-Mart systems, range in price from $299 to $599 — not including monitor. | ||

I was curious about these systems (not the ones with Lindows, because that product isn't ready), but the no OS systems (although they're the same). The motherboards are MSI, and I think the chipset is 845. Not too shabby and certainly easier than finding the parts yourself, although you do lose out on a better deal. The only things I worry about are the power supplies and the motherboard since I have no experience with any MSI botherboards I have no idea if they suck or not (I'm an ABIT man.)
But a whole system on the cheap is never really that bad, and with their one year warranty, that's acceptible since in a year you probably won't be running it anymore (assuming it still works.) |

| #5, MSI makes one of the better boards, there i845 implementation is supposed to be real good. Lots of features, one that allows you to run the system at 100Mhz quad pumped and the memory at 133 Mhz DDR instead of 100 Mhz. They have a review of the latest MSI board at hardocp. |

James, Gateway says it all. Nothing but trouble. I'd rather buy the OS-less PC from Walmart and install my extra copy of Windows 2000.
Thanks mctwin2kman for letting me know about MSI being ok. Like I said, I have no experience with them, although I had heard good things in the past, but that was a while ago and kind of lost track. |

| Cthulhu, I am an Abit man myself, but they lack the i845 setup I would like. MSI has a nice board for $99, with all the features I want plus some, it has built in NIC and 5.1 sound. Now I have an SBLive, but I could have two systems if I have an extra NIC and soundcard lying around. Anyway, with the current state of the AMD-Intel race I may switch back so I was just researching yesterday and found that MSI board. |
