Reassured by better-than-expected earnings from General Motors and Sears, investors bid blue chips higher Thursday, taking advantage of lower prices following the previous session's selloff.
In late morning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 19.62, or 0.2 percent, 8,742.80. On Wednesday, the Dow dropped 119.44 on a mixed earnings report from Intel and reduced outlook from DuPont. The Nasdaq composite index fell 4.50, or 0.3 percent, to 1,434.30. The Standard & Poor's 500 index eked out a gain of 0.14 to trade at 918.36.
Technology pulled back ahead of results from Microsoft.
