Microsoft will take major strides toward promoting server consolidation on Intel's Itanium 2 platform this week when it launches Windows Server 2003 Enterprise and Datacenter Editions. At the launch in San Francisco on April 24, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Intel President Paul Otellini plan to share details about the software, which promises enhanced symmetric multiprocessing (SMP), large-scale memory support and tighter integration between Windows Server 2003 and Intel's Itanium 2 processor.
