Microsoft pulls plug on OfficeLite | |

Microsoft has quietly nixed plans for OfficeLite, a subscription-based version of its Office productivity suite designed for the consumer and education markets, according to company documents examined by CRN. In a March 3 memo to staff involved in the initiative, Cameron Turner, a Microsoft product manager, said the "OfficeLite effort has been shelved for the [Office] 11 time frame." OfficeLite was originally slated to ship with MSN 9, but that plan also has been "tabled," according to the memo. Turner also said in the memo that the project had taught Microsoft "several important things about creating non-perpetual versions of Office [and] working with MSN." | ||

I guess they decided that every familiy can afford to buy an office software package that costs as much, or sometimes more, than the computer they are running it on.

I remember when this whole subcription model was first mentioned several years ago, the public and media went wild against it. Also why create another version of office to compete against the regular version? If MS cuts the price on office substantially I will bet that it will produce lawsuits, charges on dumping and entrenching it's monopoly.
Also a few years back weren't ASP (application service providers) the hottest thing around. They were suppose to provide a hosted thin/web version of office and charge accordingly. What ever happened there? |

I find it interesting when Apple cronies make comments about the pricing model of Microsoft. When Steve rapes them on the prices of an upgrade they say thank you sir. When Steve starts charging for services that were previously free they say it is for the best. When they have to pay 3 grand for a laptop they scream and say it is superior hardware and is appropriately priced. When Steve sells them a computer cube with a cracked case they say it is stylish.
But let Microsoft cancel something that was never released then all hell breaks loose. |
