Why Didn't Mobile Platforms Trip Microsoft Up? | |

A couple of years ago, we all thought that Microsoft really had it coming. The monopoly that gave it its power was on shaky grounds. Looking back, I wonder how we could be so naive. The antitrust case was going, and Microsoft would no longer be able to exploit its effective monopoly on desktop operating systems, we thought. But more importantly, there was an even bigger threat coming up which would make that monopoly simply irrelevant: mobile devices. Microsoft's power was based on the vast number of people who used Windows, which focused developer effort on that platform, commentators used to say. However, there was a wave of diverse devices coming, including WAP phones, various thin clients, PDAs and more. Microsoft would never be able to keep a coherent grip on them all, Windows would fragment, and opportunity would knock for its would-be rivals. | ||

Well as far as the PDA/mobile market is concerned...
I think the fact that Palm has not changed improved their devices since 1997 has something to do with them losing the lead on mobile devices. Oh wait, I'm sorry... Yes, Palm did come out with a Claudia Schiffer edition in two-tone pink, that's major innovation! |

First of all ...who is "WE"? I remember when MS partnered with Qualcomm, and even with that venture, MS worked with other companies. MS knows what it was doing at that time, and they didn't sit around and just worked on their own venture with Qualcomm. #1 yes ...people does use mobile devices. I'm supporting a few of them at work. In fact the majority of them are about to switch to the PPC / Phone Edition because of the familiarity to Windows, Word, Excel, and Outlook. As for myself, I'm waiting for Voicestream to come out with there PPC / PE this summer. Also ...the PPC / PE devices are targeted for customers that requires to gather their data on the go. PPC / PE is still more of a PDA than a phone. If you're more into making calls and less data gathering, then the SmartPhone is for you. |
