I wonder where the author has been for the last couple of decades. Microsoft has ventured into many different areas, often without a long term plan resulting in pulling a product or service. The problem isn't the "focus" on Windows and Office, its the lack of management comprehension and long term thinking, which also drives the best employees elsewhere. And when they do get an idea, they never stick with it. If it doesn't generate instant profits, MS wants nothing to do with it.
Anyone who has bought into Microsoft Hardware of any kind knows what it's like to be abandoned all of a sudden. |

| MS would have been better off being split into an app division and an OS division. The app division could make MS software for any popular software platform instead of always being tied to Windows. The OS division could make various incarnations of Windows for any popular hardware platform. |
