Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) may be trying to create a “cord-cutting” over-the-top TV service by selling access to networks’ programming through its Xbox system, Reuters reports, citing unidentified services. So far, Microsoft appears to be in the early stages of talks with programmers about its planned service, which would be at least a year away from being introduced to the public. | ||

Ah, yes. Depending on what has probably been one of the most unreliable electronic devices released in the 00's for my television.

Oh, and btw...
All these companies (MS, Netflix, etc...) and their "Cloud" and "Streaming" dreams are really not paying attention to one big problem... The continual, incessant bitching by the ISP's that users are actually USING bandwidth these days (go figure), and particularly Verizon's floating of trial-balloon's about metered access. These industries are not talking to each other. The ISP's are responsible for most of the bullshit when it comes to bandwidth, but it's bullshit the Microsoft's and Netflix's of the world need to contend with before trying to push this stuff on us. Because I, for one, won't bite. Not in this ISP un-friendly environment. |

This is just MSs way of tring to keep up with the Jones'. Hey Apple and Google are doing it, why not MS. They arguably have a better installed hardware base and software infrastructure than either Google or Apple, so why not? |

I think if the cable companies have some competition they would not be allowed to meter our bandwidth(because large companies with business plans based on the lack of a bandwidth cap would pay(congress) to keep it that way. They would also try to give us better service. I would love to pay for the NFL network but Time warner will not allow it. If I could get it via my Xbox, I bet they would change their story...
MS is doing better with the Xbox quality issue. I went through about 5 without having to pay to get them fixed. Hopefully the new Xbox will be better(I have one of the repaired originals and one of the newer version) |

| I agree with TL. Suppose I'm able to dump my cable TV, I still need internet to feed the XBOX and that is when Comcast and Verizon start charging by the mb. |

| If you guys already have unmetered access then you're better off than me. I have the top service plan with my cable ISP and that gets me a whopping 90 GB per month. |

Microsoft, along with a group that includes Google, is for Net Neutrality. Presently, the fight isn't about whether Net Neutrality should affect wire access, but wireless access. A vote on that subject is due on 21 December to the FCC commissioners.
