Europeans Doubt Microsoft Is Obeying Antitrust Order | |

The European Commission has "strong doubts" that Microsoft is obeying an order issued a year ago in a landmark antitrust ruling against the company, a commission spokesman, Jonathan Todd, said Thursday. It plans to discuss its concerns with Microsoft, and could impose fines up to 5 percent of daily worldwide sales until it decides that the company is complying. In the case, the largest antitrust action ever brought in Europe, the commission found that Microsoft broke European Union law by using a "near monopoly" in its Windows operating system to squeeze out rivals in other kinds of software. | ||

| The trick for MS now is how to get the Republicans in charge of the EU so that they can make this nasty antitrust stuff go away like in the U.S. |

| #4: In and of itself, being a monopoly is not illegal. However, abusing you monopoly to prevent competition IS illegal, because history has shown us that these kinds of monopolies keep prices high and innovation low -- the status quo in other words. MS was found guilty of this by both the US and the EU, so it's a given. It's also part of what steams a lot of people like me. I have to hear weekly from MS that they're all about innovation and choice, and how competition is good for everyone. Well, if that's the case, why do they illegally abuse their monopoly to crush said competition, unless they're a bunch of hypocritical jerks? I, for one, don't look too fondly on hypocrisy. Which is also why I bristle when I hear MS whining about its IP rights being violated, meanwhile it's busy stealing the IP of anyone it thinks it can get away with (Sendo, Burst). |

There is nothing fair about what the EU is doing to Microsoft. Here in the US, you are innocent until proven guilty - which includes all appeals. The EU has sanctioned Microsoft following the court case, but BEFORE the appellate process has run it course.
Meanwhile, the governments of France and Britain continue to support with money, contracts, and influence the Airbus aircraft company among other companies. This is true of many of the governments of Europe and their "pet" country's companies. The EU's case was brought against Microsoft by the so-called Competition Board. With two of the world's largest economic powers ensuring the success of Airbus, the EU is "the pot calling the kettle black" by their rulings. Meanwhile, one has to ask what's the point other than a huge money grab and a me too, were important too syndrome on the part of Europe. The software companies in the countries that make up the EU rank next to nothing worldwide. The leading software company in Europe is Seibel with about $1.3B in revenues and in a nitch, enterprise CRM, that Microsoft is a bit player in at this time. |
