Did Office Accounting go the same way of Money?
I have not heard anything about OA 2010..... Is MS hoping that users will move to GP or they will leave this market to QuickBooks? If the latter huge mistake IMO. |

#1, SBA is part of MS Point of Sale and is also available as a free stand-alone BA product.
As part of the back end of Point of Sale, it is very effective and its data can talk to a number of MS based members and external parties (1st data's processing API and various shippers' API's). We use it for small retail and service implementations as the BA under Point of Sales systems. As a separate P&L, we integrate it upstream with parent company GP installs, or our own Sovereign ERP suite. It's good stuff and in most ways better than QB's line of products - precisely, because of the extensions that are possible sans Intuit's limitations in the same context. For larger installs, MS Retail Sales SW works with GP/Dynamics and is not our focus (way too many really big channel partners in that space that make that their primary focus). Still, I know our SME customers have better tools and much better reporting than that coming from much bigger and more costly solutions. |

#2: SBA is surely way better than QB although my opinion coul be biased because, personally, I hate the latter.
Said that since MS launched the product they lost support from several banks as Wachovia, the one we use. Also, but I am not 100% positive about it I heard that at Convergence 2009 MS mentioned that Office Accounting was going to be put on maintenance. This should mean that the the current releases will be patched for flaws through their lifecycle, but no new versions. Did you attend it? If so did you hear anything about SBA? I would hate to have to revert to QB...... IMO killing it would be a big mistake as it was a mistake the end of Money development. #4, With a lot of these things I simply do not trust MS about how long they will support the product. As a stand-alone product, I am simply not sure. As the accounting back end to Point of Sale, I am certain they will support it. PoS is a great product and increasingly popular for small retailers and service companies. It is very easy to train people to use and equally stable. The reporting is better than other solutions and as I said, it is much easier to develop for and integrate with other members and external apps/data, etc. We have some really slick solutions running that pass online transactions through processors and banks back to the PoS and SBA and then onto larger GP/Dynamics solutions upstream - most especially for event planning where space over time is productized and space is treated as an inventory SKU accompanied by other products and related services - it scales amazingly well in this context.
About its long term future, I see two things: massive numbers of SKU's for all such products since the doughnut model is being applied by the responsible group for most member servers and potentially a lot of confusion. When I look at what they are doing across the servers they seem to be intentionally removing what clarity was there. Our supposition is that they are trying to force gross specialization by making integration much more complex than it needs to be - all in an effort to clean out the channel and drive businesses to their own online services. It won't work with us, as we have enough running already and live this stuff, but it is going to tax all in the channel and eventually wipe it out - I mean... exactly how many channel partners does Google, or Apple really have? Indeed using third party companies as sherpas opening new markets and then cutting them out is a widely used strategy; from a narrow pofitability point of view it usually works but if anything went wrong regain the trust of the sherpas is not, understendably I would add, an easy task. No matter how big a company is, how capillary it controls the territory there are so many reasons a customer could prefer keep dealing with a third party entity that I would never let greediness take over and try to circumvent them. Just my humble opinion of course..... |

#5, I literally BANK that you are correct.
It is part of why we offer better/competing products at prices SME's cannot resist and no competitor can match in terms of features, or price - not unless they are simply giving it away, which they will not do - not in the ERP space. We largely do, and I subsidize the effort with my own money, which has more to do with wanting to see the best enterprise software in the hands of every entrepreneur that wants it - seeing that as a means to keep large corporations in check, which no matter how well intentioned they may appear to be, cannot resist the damage they do in a number of contexts - not least of which is their much too close for comfort relationships with governments of ever increasing size. Besides, it's great fun to kick the crap out of Dynamics and SAP, or SAGE on both features, free customization (down to the brick) and price. We don't do enough to make them do anything other than yawn, but that'll change and interestingly, you'll see and experience it here as this site's new presence is in itself a platform and much expanded from the humble site project it began as (not to mention why it is taking so dang long - but any such thing that is worth it, generally does... and besides, why not totally kick the crap out of the social networks and freeware platforms at the same time - part of my last hoorah and something of a parting gift). |
