Microsoft to offer XP-to-Windows-7 upgrades | |

Microsoft Corp. today confirmed that it will sell what it calls "upgrades" for Windows 7 to users running the aged Windows XP operating system.

| Not having a direct easy to use upgrade from a clean functioning XP installation to Windows 7 is going to bite Microsoft in the ass. The typical user, at least half of the installed base of Windows XP, is neither willing nor able to perform what is essentially a clean install of Win7 along with reinstalling all their programs, backing up and restoring data, etc. While it makes the power user feel superior to sat that any user should be able to do what it takes, the reality is otherwise. The XP user needs a true upgrade to Win7 that saves the user files and settings on the drive (hidden temp partition or external hard drive) and then correctly writes the data back to the registry and points files to the correct Win7 location. This will take man-hours to to properly code, but to move more retail Win7, a true upgrade path from XP will be needed or millions of upgrades that could have been, won't be. |
