U.S. dissatisfied with Microsoft licenses | |

The U.S. Justice Department told a federal judge on Thursday that Microsoft still hasn't fully complied with a key provision in its landmark antitrust settlement with the government. In a report to the judge, attorneys with the department said they "remain concerned" about the price Microsoft plans to charge competitors to view the inner workings of the Windows program, a requirement under the antitrust settlement. The department is still not satisfied with the royalty structure and rates Microsoft has proposed to charge for access to computer code needed to make server software function properly with the Windows operating system. The licensing terms could be important to companies such as Sun Microsystems that are battling Microsoft in the market for software that run servers, the powerful machines that manage computer networks. | ||

cba - No. Microsoft was found guilty, and this was the proposed settlement and remedy. If MS isn't living up to the letter of the remedy, then the DOJ should do something about it.
However, if this article is really just about a bunch of open source people whining that they can't get everything in life for free, well tough cherries. |

It seems pointless to debate this issue until we find out the actual price figures we're talking about. I think the Jaguar XJ series is highway robbery at $60K but I'd become a Jaguar driver in a big hurry if it were $15K. On the other hand, I know some people who think $60K is a reasonable price for a car. Without the actual prices Microsoft is charging, we can only guess as to whether the 4 unnamed licensees who are complaining to the DOJ are as cheap as me or whether they are already driving Jaguars.
Compared to the traditional Jaguar drivers of the sofware industry (e.g. Oracle, Sun, Computer Associates, SAP, etc.) Microsoft clearly has a track record of setting prices low. It's only when come from a cheapskate perspective (e.g. Linux) that Microsoft pricing has ever seemed unreasonable. I suspect that at least half the complainers are driving Jaguars. According to the 44-page PDF just released, the actual license should be posted on the Microsoft web site approximately August 6. Until then, this whole debate is just an exercise in Slashdotters moderating each other. |
