Michael Horowitz: The day Windows XP SP3 was released I advised waiting a long time before installing it. In the three months since, I haven't installed it on a computer that mattered to me. Today, I installed it on a computer that didn't matter much, and it caused a problem. So, I tried to take advantage of the free tech support Microsoft offers for SP3 - and got a lesson in fine print.

To the author who apparently doesn't know how to find answers for problems. For XP update issues I find the following always fix the problem.
Click run. Copy and paste each line one at at time and click OK. regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\wuweb.dll regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\wups2.dll regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\wups.dll regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\wucltui.dll regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\wuaueng1.dll regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\wuaueng.dll regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\wuapi.dll Reboot after all have registered successfully. XP SP2 and SP3 Update will work unless you frakked up your PC. |

#1, Copy all the lines at once into a txt file. Rename the file from .txt to .bat
double-click the .BAT file you just renamed and let it run - click ok when prompted. Type exit and reboot. Moocho Quicker! |

@ 2, :) "You today... me tomorrow..."
(on an unrelated matter, but still of interest... read on) Problems like the above happen when one has to do a repair on a system - e.g., CHKDSK C: /R in the recovery console. (most often anyway) Ok, but then other nasty problems happen - like any protected content no longer plays at all - no matter what one does... and when one calls MS support, you end up spending most of your time convincing them that you don't have pirated software... it just sucks and is one of the areas where DRM in Vista really takes a bite out of people. Here's an example... say, like many enthusiasts you change, or upgrade CPU's... you re-hash the HAL and all "appears" to be cool, BUT... you have to expand the device manager for CPU's and on each core/CPU you have to manually update the driver for the OS/HAL to actually install support for the new CPU. Re-hashing the HAL does not work, or do enough. Problem is that once one does this, the HAL really does get updated. Ok, cool. and on Vista it will pass WGA validation. Problem is that despite passing WGA, Vista is hosed in the context of DRM and NOTHING one can do fixes it - less a call to MS Support and the endless questions about media, keys, etc... for enthusiasts it sucks. I have a tool that fixes this in seconds and like the BAT file above, it can save you a lot of time and headache - would you all like more on that and access to the file? |

http://blog.libertech.net/files/folders/utilities/entry196.aspx It works well and is especially useful when one has to repair a system, or when one upgrades a system's CPU, or Main Board. It also works well when adding a second CPU to a system running with only one physical processor. I have tested it with Vista x86 32 bit systems, and XP SP2 systems running Intel processors and chipsets. I have not tested it on AMD based systems. |
