Next Photoshop will get 64-bit boost--on Windows only | |

Adobe Systems has shared the first scrap of information about its next version of Photoshop, CS4, and it's a doozy: there will be a 64-bit version of the photo-editing software, but only for Windows and not for Mac OS X. Adobe generally keeps features in the Windows and Mac versions at a level of parity, but that wasn't possible this time around because of a change Apple made last year to the Mac's programming underpinnings, John Nack, Adobe's product manager for Photoshop, said in an interview. | ||

Well, then they don't deserve Mac users to buy their software. It's that simple.
Mac users put Adobe on the map. Screw them if they don't want to put any work into it. TL |

Its only a million lines of code that touches carbon.
Adobe should be able to whip thru that in no time .... |

#4 yea but windows has caught up in processing capabilities. don't remember exactly when or who but an exec even admitted the fact that PS works just was well on windows as it did on osx.
I'm sure they will fix it for mac's... just not for the initial release or something. Although I'd love to see market segment information these days. The old days of all graphics being done on macs is starting to fall behind. But how much iono. I'm sure there is tons of their marketshare on osx but I may bewrong. |

| Considering that Photoshop has done well for all these years while a 32-bit app, I'm not sure what everyone will miss if they don't get a 64-bit version. What's the bonus? AFAIK, 64-bit's main plus is a larger memory address space. Just how big are the images these people need to work with that they've outgrown 32-bit? |

| I am just surprised that it took this long for Adobe to support x64 on Windows in the first place. It has been in the industry for a couple of years now in RTM and a couple more before that in betas. Adobe is one of the only few workstation applications (not server apps) that could have benefited from an early adoption of 64-bit technology. I am just happy that they didn't hold back their Windows version because the Apple version couldn't be done in lock-step. |
