Microsoft charts web pirates' threat to software industry
Time: 10:26 EST/15:26 GMT | News Source: Associated Press | Posted By: Byron Hinson

New research suggests internet software piracy is spiralling. The Microsoft Asia survey found two million web pages either offering illegal software or links to pirate sites. It claims the number of offending websites has surged 100% over the past year, and 2000% in the last three. The report attributes the scale of the problem to the rising popularity of online commerce and broadband connections. Microsoft South Asia president Sanjay Mirchandani says the findings show a co-ordinated worldwide law enforcement effort is needed.

netsendjoe - Hmm, why is it people are more willing to pirate Windows than pay nothing to use Linux?

Especially if Windows isn't as good as Linux.

Weird logic you have there.

Why do wealthy people shoplift/steal?

#3 By 1896 (216.78.254.189) at 10/7/2002 11:36:39 AM
#5 what the point? Stealing is a crime, period. Your tax bracket has nothing to do with this simple fact. Would I like to travel first class instead of economy? Sure but my Company policy doesn 't allow me to do it so I fly in the back of the plane. What this notion that at $200 Win XP is very expensive based on? A big glass of soda from the fountain has an average cost of .7c and it is sold for $1 but nobody complain, why? If all thse people complaining that MS products are too expensive would stop buying and or pirating them maybe prices would go down.

"Stealing is a crime, period. Your tax bracket has nothing to do with this simple fact."
Tell that to the average citizen of the Pacific Rim, which this study seems to focus on, who's lucky if their monthly salary is $400 American.

"The Microsoft Asia survey found two million web pages either offering illegal software or links to pirate sites.

It claims the number of offending websites has surged 100% over the past year, and 2000% in the last three."

Does anyone else find these "stats" completely devoid of any telling evidence? How many hits/downloads did these "milllions" of pages have? How many unique users? What was the number of sites 3 years ago. Without further detail these 2 brief sentences with zero statistical impact in my mind are highly suspect, if not self-defeating in that they are not backed up by any substance at the moment.

#5 By 10802 (24.201.185.24) at 10/7/2002 2:04:03 PM
The monthly salary of these people has little to do with it if you consider that they managed to afford $1000+ to pay for the hardware. In this case, Windows is only about 10-20% of the total expense.

They could only claim not to afford Windows if they also shoplifted the hardware.

#6 By 135 (209.180.28.6) at 10/7/2002 2:09:43 PM
Oh, I definately think that lower prices is a good idea. But price has little to do with pirating.

One of the points that sodajerk doesn't seem to understand is that these nations are largely poor because they don't have good market economies. One of the reasons they don't have good market economies is because they do not respect one another's property. Areas like Hong Kong and such are only successful economically because they operate as leeches off the work of other nations like Taiwan, US, Japan, etc.

If they had an environment which promoted their own innovations, they could move up from being 2nd class citizens to 1st class.

I understand what is being said, but the thinking is very short sighted.

Jcak, have you been to Thailand recently? I have. They didn't have $1000+ hardware. They had $300-600 hardware (if at all and this is in Chiang Mai where people are more urbanized). It is a huge factor for areas like this, where they are just above third world, barely subsisting but at the same time they are exposed to technology and its capabilities. If you are building, recycling, and selling used hardware that would barely be perceived as a usable machine in this country, the cost of Windows and/or Office is not negligable.

#8 By 3339 (65.198.47.10) at 10/7/2002 2:20:20 PM
What I don't get is what the heck you are saying, soda: is Hong Kong a success or not? Are they a good citizen or not (I would say they are better than Japan or Taiwan corporately, economically)? Also isn't it short-sighted and simplistic to say that if these countries had a good, stable market economy with strong legal protections then there wouldn't be a problem? Why don't you recognize that these are different societies and cultures that will never feel like they have to play by our rules just because we want to sell stuff to them?

Your saying there wouldn't be a problem if there was a different gov't, economic system in Malasia, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, China, Cambodia, Laos, the Philippines, Indonesia, etc? How much more simplistic can you get? You say they won't be second-class citizens if the entire populace of all of these countries gave up being agrarian, self-sustaining tribal cultures? Again, how simplistic can you get?

sodajerk - Ok, obviously the discussion is beyond your ability to understand that you have to resort to personal attacks again.

#10 By 3339 (65.198.47.10) at 10/7/2002 4:59:11 PM
Where's the personal part, soda? I've called your position short-sighted and simplistic (because it is and because you stated mine was); I didn't call you names or say anything about your Mama.

Please explain (both where I personally attack you and what I don't understand), since in your post you were blathering on about my lack of understanding--pretty presumptuous as per the usual--particularly when I recently returned from the region and this exact issue (the differences in societies and their relationship to the Western world) has been the topic of conversation between myself and my friends over the last several weeks.

sodajerk - Take some time, go back and reread your posts... Come back when you learn to be civil.

I've done that a few times, soda. Still haven't found an insult in there, never mind a personal one. Your conception of Asia remains simplistic though and pretty insulting to anyone from there or who has an interest in the region.

Shall we elucidate your simplifications:
"these nations are largely poor because they don't have good market economies"
disagree: wouldn't necessarily help. wouldn't necessarily be possible. in some cases, is already the situation. for the most part, these nations would remain (not in terms of the GDP but in terms of the workforce) agrarian societies, which means they are already subject to and victims of international market economics.

"One of the reasons they don't have good market economies is because they do not respect one another's property"
Actually, I could hardly imagine cultures with greater respect for an individual's property and property in general. That's a pretty racist thing to say Asian's don't respect property. Maybe it's only American/Western commercialized "products" which flood their markets and prevent them from developing their own that they don't respect. But I guess that's the difference between cultures built on Buddhism vs. those built on the allmighty dollar.

"Areas like Hong Kong and such are only successful economically because they operate as leeches off the work of other nations like Taiwan, US, Japan, etc."
So Hong Kong is a success despite failing your criteria that you previously established? Funny, I thought Hong Kong is what it is because the UK, US, and other western powers leeched off of it for a century.

"If they had an environment which promoted their own innovations, they could move up from being 2nd class citizens to 1st class."
Innovations? Let's start with the fact that some of these countries still have hundreds of languages and the only leaders which need to be respected are your family ancestors. Innovation will be a concern for another time. Flooding the markets with Microsoft products isn't exactly the prescription for establishing that environment though, is it?

#13 By 3339 (65.198.47.10) at 10/7/2002 6:53:15 PM
My point exactly, Alan Richter. Don't know how any other country could be perceived as a bigger leech than America. And, for the life of me, I can't imagine a more simplistic and "Ugly-American"-type attitude than "if they just do what we do"-type philosophy... particularly without taking a few moments to understand the impact of Western culture, economics, and power in the region that produced most of these symptoms in the first place. But I'm the one who's not civil.

jgoewert, "Now, on the piracy side, what MS was pointing out isn't just your average Joe Schmo pirater who grabs a copy of Photoshop off the web. The bulk of piracy that has been increasing is from buisnesses in areas with lax intellectual copyright laws and no enforcement of the ones that exist." How the hell do you know this? I'm looking at a six sentence piece with no information of this kind. Can you post a link to the study or some other article with more detail.

So why are they pirating windows when they can get the so called latest and greatest OS for a free download or for a measley 20 bucks. If they are so poor all these nations send them a Linux disk just like Aol does. Then there would be no more monopoly just peace and love and incompatibility.
