What made me cry: Microsoft’s World Wide Telescope | |

Lots of people are asking me questions about what made me cry at Microsoft a few weeks ago. If I told you “a telescope” you’d make fun of me, right? Tell me I’m lame and that I don’t deserve to be a geek and that I should run away and join the circus, right? Well, that’s what I saw. Or, more accurately, the World Wide Telescope. | ||

This is a great story for two reasons: 1) it is wonderful that a powerful set of tools is apparently so well fashioned and executed that it provides a perspective on the universe and our tiny place within it, that it simultaneously humbles and inspires people and 2) that what one experiences when they look deep into the night sky and the universe in all its detail, can still evoke an emotional response is encouraging.
That software has the potential to extend such experiences to all people had to be what moved Robert so; when perhaps he realized how many people might be so moved, had to have driven his reaction. I never forget my own dad describing what it is to look up at the sky and see the bands of our own galaxy. Seeing that from ships at sea or from remote deserts has to be amazing. Imagining the ability to zoom into all of that seems pretty cool and more than a little humbling. If the recognition that all men will some day see the same things and realize how alike we really are doesn't move a person, I don't know what it would take. I can't wait to see this new perspective on our universe. |
