Microsoft, seeking to become a vital player in the budding world of digital media, detailed on Tuesday a host of software products intended to ensure its influence over music and video. Digital media such as MP3 music files or streams of video sent over the Internet must be created, edited, encrypted, encoded, indexed and distributed, and Microsoft has software involved in all these tasks, Amir Majidimehr, Microsoft's general manager of digital media, told hardware engineers at the company's WinHEC conference here. | ||

If you implement MPEG-4 don't you have to pay a license? You do with MP3.

| #5, I don't understand why the wide use of a thing marks that thing for give away to public domain. Wouldn't GIF fall into that category? I think that if a company produces a thing, they should be able to license it or not license it as they see fit. If they don't do it well (e.g. Sony with BetaMax) then a competing technology will replace it. If they do it well, then the company should receive license fees as long as they want to charge for it. |

| #9, actually BetaMax is still widely used today by most Broadcasters. It is even up to Digital format now. It failed for the consumer segment but has remained strong in the commercial sector for Broadcast Television. So that may not be the best example. |
