Linux needs to recognize Microsoft's leadership in some areas to better
itself, Jim Zemlin, executive director for the
Linux Foundation told delegates
at the Linuxworld tradeshow in San Fransisco. As Linux has become a mainstream operating system, it is exiting the first
stage of its life. The second stage requires a different strategy form the first
one, said the Linux promotor. | ||

wow a linux exec that knows what hes talking about, ya its about time linux respected the #1 desktop os that basically owns the market by a landslide.
Not to mention theirs another reason linux needs to start showing greater respect for Windows..... In the past year or 2 Apache and Linux have seen a huge drop in usage, while Windows 2003 saw hosting and server usage explode, some are saying that Windows 2008 Server might just push it into an area eventually equal to linux in server usage and hosting. And if asp.net development keeps up at its current rate and the server os's keep being as stable as they have been i can completely see it hapening 2003 was a beast and rock solid, and unlike linux a monkey could use it. Now add in 2008's modularity and security, the whole .net 3.0/3.5 thang while microsoft still maintains and even improves the ease of use and its kind of easy to see how they might see a continued leap in server uptake. With linux's major bread and butter being servers, they better show respect. Not having a desktop and being low surface area isnt enough when u're competitor has the same thing available as well as better management tools. |

Seems to me that the Linux community shows MS about as much respect as MS shows the Linux community. It's hard to *respect* someone who is blatantly trying to destroy you, by hook or by crook (emphasis on 'crook').
With linux's major bread and butter being servers, they better show respect. Or else what? People will stop using Linux? Bill Gates will cry? Who cares. |

| and a furthering splintering of linux's supporters is witnessed. Look no further than the tone of the article's subject (Jim Zemlin) and how different it is from the vitriol from Latch above. Not that latch's opinion matters like that of Jim Zemlin (who I've never heard of, btw)... but it shows that the stresses Microsoft has brought onto linux are starting to produce real fruit. |
