With all the Microsoft-created confusion out there around when — and even whether — the company plans to deliver the first service pack (SP) for Windows Vista, it’s nice to see some concrete proof that Vista SP1 does exist. The WinFuture.de folks managed to grab a quick snapshot of a machine running a build of Vista SP1 during one of the Rally talks at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) in Los Angeles this week. Plain as day, it says: “Windows Build 6001 Service Pack 1, v113.”) | ||

| What confusion? MS knows everyone is waiting for Vista SP1 before they even think about deploying it, so MS started talking about SP1 the first week Vista was available to the public. Didn't they plan it for Q3 or Q4 this year? Gotta spur those Vista sales any way they can. If that involves fixing Vista problems sooner than later, it's a win for everyone. |

| I don't understand why anyone would be confused. Microsoft always releases service packs for their operating systems. Longhorn server is build on the SP1 build of Vista as well. I would expect that they would continue to build the Vista OS every day on the new OS kernal as it is being improved for Longhorn server. It is not a surprise to me to see a Vista test build that is labelled SP1. To me it doesn't matter when Microsoft launches SP1 as long as they keep updating the OS through windows update. |

#4, Longhorn Server is not being built on top of Vista SP1, the code based was forked when Vista RTMed in November '06. Hence the difference in build numbers:
Windows Vista RTM: Build 6000 Windows Server 2008 BETA 3: Build 6001 The SP1 release for Vista will synchronize the kernel with the Windows Server 2008 codebase. Thats why many are considering it a major update. (I suspect this might break some applications similar to XP SP2 did), but lets hope it does not happen. Note that Vista SP1 pre-release build number is synced with Server '08 as 6001. |
