For many IT professionals within large organizations, maintaining control over their desktop environments is becoming an increasingly tall order. The cost of deploying and administering PCs – sometimes tens of thousands of PCs – across an enterprise can be significant, especially without the proper infrastructure in place to aid in the automation of these tasks. Add to that the growing complexity created by more mobile and temporary workers as well as new data security and compliance requirements – such as Sarbanes-Oxley and HIPAA in the United States – in regulated industries, and it is little wonder that some large enterprises are exploring alternative approaches to traditional desktop management. | ||

I still don't understand how we're going to roll this out to some 21,000 people. It won't be until 2008. Maybe I'll understand by then.
We typically use IBM ImageBuilder and create Imagesets, and then every tech carries them. It's the "Activation" part that I don't quite get. Anyone been through this yet? Luckily, I won't be on the side that has to figure all this out, but I will have to implement. I just want to understand it better. TL |

Larry: The corporate activation scheme is, of course, designed solely to suck as much cash from the cash cows as possible without causing excessive pain to the customer. A potential problem will be keeping the VLA keys from employees that want to “cheap out” and install the corporate version at home without permission. This could get sticky for IT departments as the number of machines associated with a key will then exceed the paid for amount, unless MS plans to automatically charge for “overages” of licenses.
As I understand it, you probably will not have more than the usual trouble with images on client machines that are full PCs. The potential issues are with the virtual appliances. These go beyond activation. Vista is too top heavy and non-modular to perform this feat at an acceptable pace unless you have enough high speed pipes to and from your server. The workaround may turn out to be using 4-GB or larger flash drives installed inside the PCs that would essentially store hibernate information, so they can't be easily stolen, and a minimum of 2-GB of local RAM. Good luck with that next year. Let us know the unforeseen crisis that occur with this “new way to deploy Vista”. |

A lot of these folks will be off the WAN at remote locations when their systems are set up. I see that as an additional complication since they won't be able to see any sort of 'activation server' or whatever it will be.
You know, corporate america really did not need this, and I think it will severely slow down the migration to Vista in the enterprise. TL |

Our MAK is good for 500 activations. If you use a MAK, the PC is activated against Microsofts servers. A MAK isn't that different from an old VLK except for the limit.
Or, we have a KMS key as well that will use our KMS server. |

| Larry: Maybe the offsite people will need to phone home, using MS's toll free line, within 30 days of installing for the "six minute" activation. |
