Byron has posted his review of the Microsoft LifeCam VX-6000. Here is an excerpt: Microsoft has taken some time to get into the “Webcam” market; it’s a market that has really been taken over by the likes of Logitech and Creative. With the release of their LifeCam set of cameras, Microsoft has finally given them some kind of competition compared to their last poor attempts. Most users of Webcams over the last few years since they first became really popular have been used to muggy small low quality video, well with the release of the LifeCam VX-6000 we have one of the latest attempts to buff up the picture quality with High Definition quality video at 1.3 megapixels. | ||

I have this camera and run it on one of my workstations/Vista. It's pretty decent, though a bit older looking and despite setting it to be used with Vista's speech recognition, it isn't recognized by it - though it works well in IM, or on our conferencing server and soft VOIP clients.
It's been a bit odd that its mic does not work with the setup I have used it for in speech on Vista - it will take a bit more work to figure out. I've tried other mics, one being a directional bar that will follow the speaker physically, which work well as a speech input device. Perhaps it is that the VX-6000's mic is not suitable for speech input under Vista - not good, considering the camera's higher than average cost. |

#2 you more easily and affordably, make your own...
buy an IR - Infrarred Lens filter for a powerful hand-held spotlight. Attache the IR Lens over teh spot using a cut-out from a car tire inner tube - about 1 and 1/2" inch wide and smaller than the diameter of your spotlight. Shine the light at night, and use any cam-corder toview the light - any CCD head can see IR and with the bright filtered IR, you'll be able to see very clearly... and yes, at close range and opposite thinner material, it can see though clothing. http://www.maxmax.com/aXNiteFilters.htm |
