Microsoft Plans 'Fresno' Windows Server Appliance | |

Microsoft will take on Linux in the appliance market with an entry-level "Longhorn" Windows Server that will support a small number of users but requires no client access licenses, channel sources say. The planned Windows Server OS appliance, code-named Fresno, will be bundled by OEMs and system builders and is targeted for availability in 2007 as part of the Longhorn server lineup. The Longhorn appliance, with software and hardware included, will be priced at less than $1,000, several sources said. The software is slated to be available only to OEMs and system builders and cost a few hundred dollars. Microsoft didn't comment on the matter. | ||

No kidding - what the frac are they smoking....
I have this weird feeling that they have becomes so gun-shy and overrun with lawyers that they have lost some sense of themselves... I mean, there so many examples of this nonsense... the flap over enthusiasts [their strongest supporters and free sales forces...], being "Cleaned up" in terms of licensing language... reversed of course, but only after a minor rebellion... Next there is the language they use to limit testers and evals of products.... Then they gag BETA testers with a wet sock... They are going to lose it all if they keep this crap up - language - language - language! Seems like a functionary who has no heart and no soul is leading some effort to completely piss off their base - just to appear like he's/she's doing something... NOTE TO MICROSOFT: TRUST YOUR CUSTOMERS! We're the one's paying the fracking bills! P.S., REWARD YOUR CUSTOMERS! [and go slap a lawer with the wet sock you'll be taking out of the mouths of testers]. |

I don't know what you two read, but Frenso requires no CALs.
Not only that, but every base version of Winows Server (just your standard version) has always came with 5 CALs. SBS comes with 25 (I think), Enterprise comes with 25 as well (I think), etc... Please don't post on the matter when you obviously have no idea what you are talking about. |

#3, The Longhorn appliance would allow a small number of Windows clients, perhaps as many as five, to attach to the server without paying expensive CAL fees.
We're commenting on the article and in relevant ways - that relevance is supported by the quote, as above. You're making a huge jump when assert for having done so, that we have no idea of what we are doing or experience with licensing models. I'll try and do better... |

I assume they are talking about OEM's using this to build NAS boxes around. Right??
If so, MS is so far behind I don't think this will catch on. I'm no Linux fan, but the Linux based NAS boxes out there have become extremely user-friendly and powerful, with no additional cost to the developer. The code is mature and stable. I just purchased a QNAP TS-201 and threw a couple of the new Seagate 320GB 7200.10 Perp drives in it. The whole setup took all of 15 minutes and I was up and running. And it supports pretty much EVERY machine and operating system out there using standard communication protocols. FTP Server, UPnP Server, Web Server, MultiMedia Server, File server all in one little $349 box. TL |
