The PlayStation 2 will be the best-selling video game console this holiday
season, eclipsing the two new other consoles that launch in mid-November,
according to a survey of retailers released this week. The PlayDate 2001 report,
released by marketing services firm PlayDate Inc. on Tuesday, surveyed 25 major
and specialty toy and video game retail chains across the country to gauge their
opinion on the top-selling products for the holiday season. According to the
survey, released today at the firm's annual convention in New York, Sony Corp.'s
PS2 is expected to outsell the Xbox from Microsoft Corp and the GameCube from
Nintendo Co. Ltd The Xbox launches Nov. 15. The GameCube launches
Nov. 18. The PS2 launched in November of last year but was in short supply
throughout the holidays and did not become available in large quantities until
earlier this year.
