Microsoft adds Sender ID to list of free specs | |

As part of an ongoing initiative to give users access to its technology, Microsoft Corp. Monday added a format for fighting spoof e-mail to a list of specifications that can be used freely for development. Sender ID, an e-mail specification for detecting when an e-mail address is being spoofed to send spam, can now be used as a basis for new technology by anyone under Microsoft's Open Specification Promise (OSP), said Jason Matusow, senior director of interoperability for Microsoft Through the OSP, published in September, Microsoft promised it would not take any patent-enforcement action against people that want to use specifications on a list of Web services technologies for which it has patents. Now Sender ID has been added to the list of specifications that are freely available for use, he said. | ||

Yeah TL, but it sure holds promise. With simple records added to each DNS Zone file, we could all but eliminate SPAM. Regardless of who held it, admins [DNS Operators for authoritative Host Named DNS Services], could easily have added required records for each host and email server that they were providing resolution for - it literally takes just seconds per domain. With SPF, SPAM dries up so fast and botnets become irrelevant. False positives are nill.
It does begin with basics - truly authoritative host named DNS services - with delegate authority for both forward and reverse lookup zones for assigned address spaces [I can hardly count the number of times we've helped even the biggest of providers understand this - especially for the reverse delegation authority]... then one adds the records for each zone that support SPF and activates filters that look for the SPF records against all in-bound senders. It's simple - very fast and THE MOST effective way to block SPAM. The hard part is getting admins to even look at their zone files - much less clean them up and demand that their providers and hosts get it right. Good SPF filters allow one to introduce this gradually and make exceptions for lame admins/supported domains. With at least 80 - 90% of all email being SPAM, and much of containing mal-ware, I hope all people embrace SPF - and very soon! |
