Microsoft and its security rivals are feuding over a key piece of Windows Vista real estate. The fight is over the display of technology that helps Vista owners manage the security tools on their PC. Symantec, McAfee, Check Point Software Technologies and other companies want Microsoft to change Vista so their products can easily replace the operating system's built-in Windows Security Center on the desktop. But Microsoft is resisting the call. | ||

Microsoft's Windows Security Center demonstrates fairly limited sophistication, and having (it) control the console could take away the consumer's visibility into the threats he faces...
In other words, they won't have a market if they can't scare users by producing reports that claim to have cleaned up "957 instances of malware"--even though they were all cookies--and perpetuate the notion that their product is doing a lot of heavy lifting 24/7, rather than just slowing down their system. Ultimately, it's something the consumer should decide, not Microsoft. True customer choice is probably not what McAfee and Symantec want. Norton AV in particular seems to harm a system more than help it, in my experience. |

WAAAA WAAA we can't take over a part of the operating system that we don't belong in, whats next they'll complain that they cant brand symantec all over the control panel and startup logo? give me a fu*king break... i really hate this
they slow down computers, they take over areas they dont belong in, they startup even when asked not to in many cases, they are increasingly hard to remove, and they have strange things like blocking mail completely if your subscription ends (god im an IT person im so sick of customers complaining their email isnt working just to find out after 10 minutes on the phone that their norton is expired) These big AV companys are becomming more like spyware designers than actual protection mechanisms.... They need to step back and look at systems like AVG, Avast and OneCare and look at what customers really want, a nice streamlined LIGHTWEIGHT antivirus, not some software thats trying to take over the entire computer... STAY AWAY FROM MY SECURITY CENTER! This is like as if Microsoft was to complain that apple won't let them take over the control panel when a user installs office, its a part of the OS not an extra program its a component of the actual fu*king OS... they have no right to take it over and i stand beind microsoft in this case 110%! |

It appears to me that Symantec, companies like it, as well as foreign governments, do not want Microsoft software to be secure - most especially a secure operating system.
I assess that they are in fact, terrified of Vista being secure. Count on this subject occupying a great deal of our time over the next few years. Symantec will bring one lawsuit after another and work with the EU to force some "N" model bovine scatology on all of us - and no one will buy it. Even good security products like Panda Software used to make have become so bloated and heavy that we no longer use them. One Care is so much better - so much more focused on its role and less stressful on the system. This one is just starting folks and Vista hasn't even shipped. |

You guys are hilarious. Yes, I'm sure that the EU is so in love with the IE/Windows "own your box" exploit of the week that they insist that Vista be less secure. If that makes sense in your world, you need professional help. I've said it before and I'll say it again, and eventually your jingoistic brains might accept the knowledge: the EC will not let MS deliberately exclude competitors under the veil of security enhancements. Just as integrating IE deeply into WIndows was portrayed as a user benefit, the reality was they did it to crush Netscape. MS better not claim they had no choice but to cut off all competition in the antivirus/malware space for security reasons, and then announce the pricing plan for MS Antivirus.

| It should be mentioned that Symantec, and probably others, are already at work side-stepping the problem, even while complaining about it. With the new Vista design changes, they can write drivers at the user level, without the need for kernel level drivers and access, and still get the job done. And while they are at it, maybe they can make their products lighter, faster, and work better. They are just cranky because they have to change how they hook into the lower levels, and didn't want to have to think about a better way of doing things. The down side is that they will probably have to have 2 separate product streams, one for XP / 2003, which does things the old way, and one for Vista only, which does things the new way, which will likely be incompatible with older OSes. |
