I lived and worked and taught in Europe for many years - and could never understand any group. Individuals, yes, but any group larger than say five people? Nope - not at all.
It may sound very romantic, but until one looks back at America for so long and from so far away, one cannot understand just how magical a place America is - despite all its flaws, past failures and wrongs - it at least examines them, and works to correct them.
The thing that struck me most about European leaders is how certain they were - not confident mind you, but in the context of convinced about...... fill in your own blank here.
Their conviction so effectively isolates and constricts people - where what they are and might ever be is not just decided for them, but accepted.
In the end it was just sad to watch play out time and again.
