Graphics chipmaker Nvidia announced Tuesday that it will make some of its Cg development tools for programming high-level graphics effects available as open-source software. Nvidia introduced Cg last month as part of a new focus on programmability in graphics chips. Thanks to advances in Microsoft's ubiquitous DirectX library of graphics instructions, graphics chips are beginning to handle computing tasks on their own rather than simply taking orders from the PC's main processor. | ||

LOL well, BobSmith, if youre saying that these are the FIRST EVER high quality open source developer tools then yes.. he was right at the time of the challenge. But since they are NOT the first.... I just used this news to illustrate by example that development tools dont have to be closed / shared source in order to be high quality.
I also want to reiterate that i am NOT interested in advocating open source. But I AM against people who can see only ONE way. I dislike the Microsoft sheep on this site exactly as much as i dislike the OpenSource sheep on Slashdot. I believe both sides have advantages and are good at certain things. Its just that i can't stand people who make statements claiming there are no high quality open source development tools or software. Thats just ludicrus. Just as ludicrus as some other jerk claiming Microsoft is evil and sucks! |

| Not trying to take sides or start an argument or anything, but despite these and other tools being open/shared source, my experience has been that the majority (not ALL) of open source software that is competitive in quality/featureset to their closed source counterparts has been developed or helped by generally closed source companies. Rarely does this occur in the hands of loosly organized groups of individuals that are behind most open source projects. |
