Gartner: Turn Off File Sharing In Google Desktop | |

Google Desktop 3 Beta poses a data security risk to enterprises, Gartner said in a research posting on its Web site. Tech research firm Gartner Inc. is recommending that enterprises turn off the file-sharing feature in Google Inc.'s desktop software. In a research posting on its site, Gartner said businesses allowing employees to use Google Desktop 3 Beta, which was released Feb. 9, should start using the enterprise version of the software immediately. In addition, it said businesses should disable the Search Across Computers feature. The feature enables people to share files in their computers. Google does this by storing index copies of the files on its server for up to 30 days. The information is encrypted, and computer users decide which files they want to share. | ||

Why the heck did Google implement this so that they need to store stuff on their own servers? Why not a peer-to-peer solution, where each computer maintains its own index, and computer A asks computer B to perform a search on its behalf?
I suppose one reason is so that you can do the search even if computer B is off... but even so, when you'd go to actually access the file, you'd get an error anyways. |

The concept of accessing work files while traveling from another PC accessing Google's server, if it works, is a good one. However, it is also quite stupid from a security point of view.
Some seemingly good ideas should never see the light of day and wouldn't if FMEA thinking (Failure Mode Effects Analysis) were applied to the concept to determine what could possibly go wrong. |

#2 You just answered the question yourself - and it would have also been so that you can search your work pc from home and vice-versa without worrying about corporate firewalls etc. Note that I'm not sure of how many businesses would allow the second reason but that it up to their internal policies - all the places I've worked for have had a strict no installing any software policy but they made exceptions for certain titles - the rest you would get a warning email for and if you didn't remove it, they would come down and rebuild your pc. Remember that you are still in control of selecting whether you want to use that feature or not and you are still in control of which files you want to include. #4 And so there should be!!! If Microsoft were to do this then you can bet they would do it secretly like you said... until they got caught red handed. Google on the other hand aren't like Microsoft (don't think they haven't bent over for China and any other government that has money to pay), they tell you all about the feature which is turned OFF by default, once again the opposite to Microsoft who like to leave everything turned on by default all in the name of "easy to use": http://desktop.google.com/features.html#searchremote "In order to share your indexed files between your computers, we first copy this content to Google Desktop servers located at Google. This is necessary, for example, if one of your computers is turned off or otherwise offline when new or updated items are indexed on another of your machines. We store this data temporarily on Google Desktop servers and automatically delete older files, and your data is never accessible by anyone doing a Google search. You can learn more by reading the Google Desktop privacy policy. While your data is automatically deleted from our servers, you can use the Clear my Files from Google button to manually remove all your files from Google Desktop servers. Note that if these files haven’t yet been copied to your other computers, clicking this button will prevent you from finding them when you search from your other computers. The files will, of course, still be searchable from their computer of origin." |

| #7 Hey scare tactic boy, your one PHP worm was fixed in June 2005!!! A full 24 hours after it was released!!! How pathetic are you? You need to stop worrying about bugs that have been fixed for over 7 months and start worrying about all the unpatched IE bugs from 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006! If only Microsoft could release patches in 24 hours rather than 4 years and waiting! |
