In the report filed with U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, the Justice Department said it had received 30,000 responses, 1,250 unrelated to the case. Roughly half the comments were against the settlement, 7,500 were in favor of the deal, and 7,000 expressed no sentiment either way. Microsoft, the Justice Department and nine states agreed to the settlement in early November, with nine other states and the District of Columbia choosing to continue with litigation. | ||

Wow, this is *very* misleading.
It suggests that the general public "frowns" on the deal, but the only way to determine that would be with a random sample, not an online poll. What's the difference? Well, and online poll is far from a random sample - especially when it's posted on Slashdot. |

#6 - Exactly. The difference is that in an election all candidates have an opportunity to lobby for their cause. In this particular one, the anti-MS zealots lobbied hard, but any attempt to lobby by Microsoft was charecterized in the manner of #4's post.

#11 - I don't see how your suggestion would create a level playing field at all. Rather is seeks to replace Microsoft, which is not the answer.
What I would like to see out of this is regulations that apply across the industry. If it's wrong for one company, it's wrong for all companies... that's the only way to create a level playing field. BTW, the settlement specifically addressed the individual complaints brought up in the trial that were particularly damning to Microsoft. Granted it does not address the fantasy arguments many people put forth, but should it? This post was edited by sodablue on Friday, February 08, 2002 at 00:30. |
