Numerous installations of Microsoft ASP.NET are vulnerable to cross-site scripting (CSS), according to a recent post by Johannes Westerink to the BugTraq mailing list. CSS leverages JavaScript and makes it possible to place a malicious URL in an e-mail or on a Web site, which if followed will compromise the user's machine by various means, including exposing shares and/or retrieving data files such as cookies. JavaScript can also be executed on a remote server using malicious URLs. There are numerous possible attacks; but for one common example, a 404 page may be generated with the added bonus of full path disclosure. | ||

This is getting ridiculous.
The title obviously suggests that .NET has a hole in it. The article waits until the very end to reveal that it was a bug in the beta, of which there were many - hence the term BETA. In addition, cross-site scripting bugs have nothing to do with .NET. It also suggests that Westerink was the only person to have sent the bug to Microsoft, when they have absolutely no proof of that whatsoever. What they know is that Westerink sent an e-mail to Microsoft about a bug in a beta product which tens of thousands of people were testing and using. They know that Microsoft never replied, but have no idea of why they never replied. It could have been that the bug was already marked and known, and that the e-mail was discarded because of that. Microsoft states all over the place (including, and *especially* their go-live agreements with beta software) that the software may include bugs and should be used with caution. The Register is pathetic. |
