Save as XPS in Office “12” | |

Recently, I have had a number of questions on this and I am happy to confirm that Office “12” will support a native Save as XPS feature in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Publisher, Visio, OneNote and InfoPath. This, of course, raises a whole bunch of additional questions for me to answer:

What's the compelling reason to use XPS instead of pdf? I don't want to imply XPS is not good, but pdf is the standard in this area.

#1 From Microsoft's point of view - they don't get to own PDF and they don;t like anything they can't control. From the consumer's point of view, if you love Microsoft like many people here do - it gives you the opportunity to convert yet another application to a Microsoft-only solution.
"If you are going to be the top dog have to beat the top dog" Not necessarily - you usually only have to make something good enough and bundle it in with the OS ensuring that 95% of the desktop market has it when they upgrade to the next version. If you can't wait until then then include it as part of a Service Pack and ensure that it needs to be installed. |
