'Monad' Scripting Shell Unlikely to Debut in Longhorn | |

However, Microsoft is planning to make its alternative to Unix and Linux command-line scripting available as part of Exchange 12, due next year. Yet another piece of technology originally expected to surface in Longhorn looks as if it won't make it into the product. The latest element to get the ax is "Monad," aka the Microsoft Shell (MSH) that Microsoft has touted as its alternative to the scripting shells that Unix and Linux programmers know and love. | ||

| Always read Mary Jo's articles with skepticism. I expect them to release Monad itself with Longhorn as expected, however the amount of things that you can administer with it may be limited. I interpret the "3 to 5 years to develop and deliver" to refer to building the various components of Windows and server products to be Monad-enabled. |

| Monad was expected to be in Windows Server 2003 R2 later this year. Not only missing that, but Longhorn, as well, seems like a huge, unrealistic leap. I think Ms. Foley is falsely assuming that "it will take three to five years to fully develop and deliver" means that we won't see it, period, for three to five years. I think that Microsoft, all along, has been preparing to ship parts of Monad in 2003 R2 and Longhorn. She should know better that Microsoft rarely ever lets things sit in the labs for 3-5 years without releasing working parts of it in the meantime. |
