Longhorn will run on some older PCs too | |

Although Microsoft is recommending that computers be pretty modern to fully run the next version of Windows, Longhorn will probably also run on a good number of older machines. That's the good news. The bad news is that Longhorn is going to look and run quite differently on those older systems. Computers with a 3GHz processor and 512MB of memory, for example, will get all of the bells and whistles including fancy graphics and the ability to handle multiple video streams. According to its early testing, Microsoft says that older PCs--probably those with as little as 128MB of memory--will be able to run Longhorn, but the OS may not look like it does on a newer, more powerful machine. Many of these older machines that run Longhorn will have experiences that are "quite XP-like," said Richard Russell, a developer in Microsoft's Windows core operating system division. | ||

| I don't think there are any 3GHz processors for laptops. Since Intel and AMD have gotten away from the processor speed is most important/best measure, and have made imporvments in other areas, I wonder if this is the best measure for MS to be using. |

hmmmm..... i've got a 3Ghz machine with 1 gig of memory and i turn off most of the fancy stuff in XP to get a faster and smoother computing experience.
i wonder if will longhorn offer enough enhancements to justify an upgrade if you have the eye candy turned off? |

oldog: So enhanced file organization, re-write of most OS componants, Avalon, WinFS (later on), and not to mention the fact that most apps will run on Longhorn only in the future, after a couple of years, at least.
There are so many under the hood changes to Longhorn, I would get it even without Aero Glass. |

I think it's more like 3 Ghz equivalent as compared to a desktop P4. AMD's CPUs and Intel's mobile CPUs (PM/Centrino) execute more instructions per clock than a desktop P4 and offer equivalent or better performance at lower clockrates.
The better the GPU you have, the lower you CPU requirements will be to get equivalent performance as well (to a point). DX 9-class GPUs (generally) may not fully accelerate the entire pipeline for certain operations (ClearType text rendering for example). WGF 2.0 GPUs will (possibly 1.0 as well but I don't remember). Also with dual core available now, CPU speed will be even less of an issue when LH ships next year (not that it's an issue w/o dual core). |
