Microsoft seen facing security quandary | |

It must make improvements or rile customers. Selling its own products will upset other vendors. If Microsoft Corp. does not do more to stem Internet attacks, the company risks further alienating customers unhappy with the multitude of threats already facing its ubiquitous software. Sell its own security products, on the other hand, and Microsoft faces a potential backlash from some of its allies - the companies that now provide an extra layer of security for its Windows operating system, Internet Explorer browser, and other products. With a powerhouse like Microsoft becoming a direct competitor, they could get squeezed out. What a quandary. | ||

Microsoft is a convicted monopolist (whether you agree with the conviction is a different issue). Any attempts to give away or integrate new functionality, which is currently provided by competitors, will be seen as unfair competition.
Some may also see the give-away as dumping: providing a product at below cost to gain market share or harm competitors. There's also a perception that Microsoft is giving-up on securing Windows. Why isn’t Microsoft putting its resources into making windows less susceptible to malware instead of an after-the-fact solution? Lastly is a question for Microsoft: When are you going to promote the idea that default home user accounts should be non-administrative? This solution would defeat most malware. |

They are convicted of *abusing* their monopoly. It's not against the law (in the USA) to have a monopoly. "There's also a perception that Microsoft is giving-up on securing Windows." It's impossible to be 100% secure, hence the reason for after market anti-virus/anti-spyware apps for all OS's. This post was edited by AWBrian on Tuesday, February 22, 2005 at 13:10. |
