Microsoft's Top Officials May Testify to Help Fight Sanctions | |

To make its case against severe sanctions, Microsoft, shifting its previous strategy, has named both Bill Gates, its cofounder and chairman, and Steven A. Ballmer, the chief executive, as witnesses in a trial on remedies in the antitrust case it lost. The opposing sides in the remedies trial Microsoft and nine states exchanged witness lists late Friday night. In addition to Mr. Gates, Mr. Ballmer and other company executives, the Microsoft list includes 21 expert and industry witnesses including representatives from other software makers, personal computer manufacturers, an electronics retailer, a telephone company, a cable television company and a venture capital firm. | ||

Eh? Some executive from Palm is going to testify against Microsoft?
I don't get it. 2 years ago the Palm people were all huffing and puffing and proclaiming WinCE to be dead. It wasn't any competition for them, they claimed, people didn't want the complexity. People don't need color, they don't want multimedia capabilities. All they want is a monochrome display that does address lists and calendaring. So they announced the Claudia Schiffer Palm edition in 12 stylish colors and called it innovation. And now they're going to claim Microsoft is stifling them? They blew their fricking foot off two years ago by not responding to the featureset being offered by PocketPC, and now they are going to claim Microsoft is stifling them? Christ, this lawsuit is getting stupider by the minute. |

I remember that well, Sodablue. I welcomed the PocketPC/WinCE devices. Finally there was some power in a hand-held, and a color screen. I never really cared for Palm devices. I thought the Apple Newton had more potential until they killed it. At least with it and the PocketPC, you could write normally instead of having to use Grafitti. Palm even fell behind Handspring. It's kind of like the Netscape issue that started this whole mess.
Does anyone know why Nokia is testifying against Microsoft? My only guess is that they are pissed that Microsoft is entering the cell phone market with SmartPhone 2002 and the PocketPCs. If that's the case, Nokia could always license the OS and build Windows-based phones like Ericsson and others. This post was edited by n4cer on Sunday, February 10, 2002 at 20:24. |

Nokia could make a compatible solution if they don't want to license CE from Microsoft. The communication protocol is whatever the phone system uses (CDMA, GSM, etc.). The data for the services is XML, and the transport layer is SOAP. The framework is standard, and freely available. They could make their own implementation. Also, all web services would not be dependant on the client having .NET installed on the client. .NET might only be used on the backend. And, there are other ways Nokia phones may be incompatible with services offered by providers. For instance, if streaming media/video conferencing capabilities were offered by the provider and Nokia didn't wanted that capability. They would most likely have to license software or a codec from a third party to gain that capability. Otherwise, they would remain incompatible.
Besides, licensing CE would be no harder than how Nokia is currently licensing AIM from AOL or a Microbrowser from Netscape (AOL). They most likely also pay Sun for their Java-enabled phones. Maybe this has something to do with them being a Liberty Alliance member. Maybe they fear backlash from Sun or AOL if they don't go against Microsoft. |
